Earlier this month, Boundless Learning participated in Research in Distance Education (RIDE) 2026, hosted by the University of London through its Centre for Online and Distance Education unit.

Marking the 20th anniversary of the RIDE conference series, this year’s event — focused on the themes of reflecting, innovating, developing, envisioning the future — brought together a diverse community of higher education leaders, researchers, and practitioners to examine the evolution and future trajectory of digital and distance learning.

For Boundless Learning, the event provided a valuable opportunity to engage with sector peers and reflect on how online education has matured over the past two decades. What was once considered a peripheral or alternative mode of delivery is now firmly embedded within the core operating models of leading universities, particularly across the UK and international markets.

Lessons from past experience and expectations for the future

A standout session was “20 years of student digital learning experiences and what does the future hold?” This panel captured a central theme that resonated throughout the event: Technology alone has never been the defining factor in successful online education.

“The session reflecting on 20 years of student digital learning experiences was a powerful reminder that technology alone has never been the defining factor in successful online education,” said Joël McConnell, Senior Director for Portfolio Management and Growth, who represented Boundless Learning at RIDE 2026. “What emerged clearly from the discussion is that student success depends on how well institutions understand the lived digital experience of their learners, particularly international and TNE [transnational education] students navigating complex digital environments, and a multitude of individual learning contexts.”

This insight aligns closely with what we see across our university partnerships. While platforms, tools, and increasingly AI-enabled capabilities continue to evolve at pace, the real differentiator lies in how effectively institutions design and deliver end-to-end learner experiences.

For organisations like Boundless Learning, this reinforces the importance of building holistic learner lifecycle models that extend well beyond enrolment. Supporting students in an online environment requires a coordinated approach across multiple touchpoints, including onboarding and induction, academic support, engagement monitoring, and retention interventions.

“From onboarding and academic support through to engagement analytics and proactive retention strategies, the future of digital education will increasingly depend on institutions’ ability to listen to students, anticipate barriers, and intervene early to help learners stay on track,” Joël said.

Online higher ed in the age of AI: More contextualisation, better personalisation

Across the discussions at RIDE 2026, there was also a clear recognition that the next phase of digital education will be shaped by a focus on continued contextualisation and increased personalisation, enabled in part by advances in artificial intelligence.

However, these developments bring new complexities, particularly in supporting diverse, geographically distributed student populations with varying expectations, digital access conditions, and learning behaviours.

In this context, the role of universities is evolving. Institutions are not only providers of content and credentials but also orchestrators of integrated support ecosystems that enable student success at scale.

This is where strategic partners play a critical role: Bringing together data, insight, and operational capability to help institutions deliver consistently high-quality learner experiences.

Key takeaway: Success in higher ed depends on tech and strategy alike

As the sector looks ahead, one conclusion from RIDE 2026 stands out: The future of online education will not be defined by technology adoption alone, but by how effectively institutions align strategy, support, and student insight to deliver meaningful outcomes.

For Boundless Learning, this remains at the core of our work with university partners — supporting the design and delivery of scalable, student-centred online programmes that combine academic excellence with robust, data-informed learner support.
