The Future of Institutional Growth Is Bigger Than Enrollment
By Dana La Fleur, Vice President of Strategic Partnerships and Insights
When conversations turn to institutional growth, enrollment is often the first metric that comes to mind.
Enrollment will always matter, but I believe the conversation has become much bigger than that.
Today, colleges and universities are navigating a complex set of challenges: Shifting learner expectations, financial pressures, changing workforce demands, rapid advances in technology and AI, and increasing pressure to demonstrate outcomes. Meeting those challenges requires more than growing enrollment. It requires institutions to rethink how they operate, collaborate, and create value over the long term.
The institutions making the greatest progress are looking beyond simply investing in new programs or new technologies. They're solidifying their groundwork and creating stronger operating models that are focused on strategy and built to align enrollment, learner success, technology, and financial stewardship around a shared vision for sustainable growth.
Just as importantly, no two institutions are facing exactly the same circumstances. Every university has its own mission, market position, strengths, and constraints. That's why meaningful growth doesn't begin with a predefined solution. It begins with strategic insights and understanding.
Strategizing for the future of higher education with NACUBO
For more than 30 years, Boundless Learning has partnered with colleges and universities as a growth and operations partner, helping institutions build the modern operating model for online, continuing, and professional education. Every partnership begins with strategic advisory because understanding an institution's unique goals, challenges, and opportunities is the foundation for building lasting capability and long-term independence.
That perspective is one of the reasons I'm excited that Boundless Learning has joined the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO) as a Corporate Member and why I'll be attending the 2026 NACUBO Annual Meeting in Anaheim this July.
Business officers are playing an increasingly important role in shaping the future of higher education. Today's conversations extend well beyond budgets and balance sheets. They include institutional resilience, operational effectiveness, technology investments, and workforce alignment. These discussions require collaboration and lead to sustainable models for growth.
I'm looking forward to engaging with NACUBO members to learn how institutions are approaching these challenges. Iām eager to exchange ideas with leaders across higher education and explore how stronger operating models can help universities adapt with confidence while remaining true to their mission.
If you'll be attending the NACUBO Annual Meeting, I'd welcome the opportunity to connect. The future of institutional growth won't be defined by enrollment alone. It will be shaped by how effectively institutions align people, strategy, operations, and technology to serve learners for years to come.
